Extracurricular Activities
Mishmar
Our Mishmar program meets each Monday (grades 6) and Thursday (Grades 7 and 8) after school. It offers boys in Grades 6-8 the opportunity to learn at their own pace any subject in the Hebrew curriculum that is of interest to them. A small teacher/student ratio helps to ensure the success of the program.
Basketball Teams: Boys - Hillel Heat/ Girls - Hillel Hurricanes
Seventh and eighth graders are invited to try out for the school basketball teams. After selection, players will be required to have a medical form completed by a physician of choice. NO STUDENT MAY ATTEND PRACTICE OR PLAY UNLESS THIS MEDICAL FORM IS COMPLETED AND SUBMITTED.
The basketball team offers our students the opportunity to compete against other yeshiva day schools throughout the state of New Jersey and potentially compete in playoff competition with schools in the greater New York area. Basketball practice takes place one night a week in our gym. A strong sense of teamwork is built through the exciting season.
All students who represent Hillel Yeshiva on the Hillel teams must:
-
Maintain an 80 average
-
Demonstrate behavior and middot in accordance with Hillel policies.
Gruss Foundation Programs
E2K Gruss Foundation
Hillel Yeshiva has been selected to participate in the after school enrichment E2K Math and Science Program. This program, Excellence 2000 (E2K), is being subsidized by the Gruss Foundation of New York. It was developed in Israel to address the needs of middle school students who have demonstrated high academic achievement and are self-motivated in Math and Science. E2K is an inquiry program which has been modeled in New York, Illinois and Iowa. Asking questions and working in cooperative groups are required skills for success. Hillel Yeshiva is proud to be one of the few Hebrew Day schools in New Jersey to offer this program. Classes will meet on Tuesday afternoons 4:30-6:00 p.m.
Fall Semester Eligible students of grades 6&8.
Spring Semester Eligible students of grades 6&7.
The E2K Program Grade 5
The E2K program for grade 5 is held every Thursday for some of the brightest and most imaginative Fifth Graders in Hillel Yeshiva.. Each lesson begins with a short story, meant to raise a question or a problem. These engaging anecdotes prompt the students to begin to think and analyze the given situation. The conclusion of the story inherently raises a predicament that the student will spend the next 40 or so minutes working out, in groups. While it is the coach’s job to see that the students move towards a correct solution, they have free reign on how to approach the subject. This allows the students to assume leadership roles within groups, and delegate responsibilities in a mature and productive way. The program is as much about science, math and logic, as it is about cooperative learning. Generally, a class discussion concludes the hour long session in which the groups have time to report their findings, and observe how other groups arrived at their answers. While the program is intellectually and socially stimulating, the class size and chemistry within the groups themselves create a warm and inviting environment, a necessary ingredient in any learning system
Gruss Computer Lab (Room 222)
All students in grades 1-5 will participate in a bi-weekly skills oriented program called Success Maker. Each session will be divided into a Math lesson and a Literacy session. This computer program will identify each individual child’s level and will design a custom tailored program for him/her. This computer Gruss Lab is under the direction of our site manager, Mrs. S. Rosenstein as well as the classroom teacher who monitors the individual progress of each student.
Gruss Tal-Am Digital Ivrit Lab
All first grade Hillel Yeshiva students participate in this pilot program which is funded by the Gruss Foundation. Each first grade class attends the Gruss Lab for 20 minutes, twice a week, for the duration of each session during the Judaic Studies portion of their day.
Gruss Waterford Program
Waterford Early Literacy Program provides the opportunity for an early literacy experience in Language Arts and Math in Kindergarten students which is funded by the Gruss Foundation.
Gruss S.E.T Program
SET 20.20 Science, Engineering, Teamwork, Technology and Training Initiative is a program offered by the GRUSS foundation. The students in the program will be designing and building a non-electric energy efficient wheel chair lift.
The team is being coached by a member of our Science Faculty, Mr. T. Dowling and Mr. Joel Javitt, Coordinator of the Engineering Program for CIJE (Center for Initiatives in Jewish Education) in New York. The students will compete with the SET 20.20 teams from around the world in an international competition where they will demonstrate their finished product to scientifically oriented judges. In addition, the students will present their product as if they were attempting to “sell” it to a general audience of “customers or “investors.”
Science Olympiad
Eligible participants in grades 4 and 5 meet weekly on Friday afternoons from 1:30-2:30 p.m. The Science Olympiad competes in the annual Inter-Yeshiva Olympiad against Olympiad teams in the Maor Yeshivot of the Greater Metropolitan Area. Last year’s Science Olympiad Team, under the direction of Mr. Louis Krieger, won First Place.

Math Clinic
This year after identifying math skills that have not been mastered by some of the fifth grade students, an after school Math Clinic was formed. Through the use of the Gruss Foundation’s Pearson Successmaker program, custom courses were developed. Some areas included operations in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division as well as fractions and decimals. Students received assistance while working on the computer program as well as one-on-one off the computer. Progress was apparent with all of the students.
